Press Release: Emerson’s wireless technology helps improve operational efficiency of biomass power plant in Italy

Posted on 7th March 2013

Smart Wireless transmitters provide increased visibility into the process, support predictive maintenance and provide tank overspill protection

AUSTIN, TEXAS (March 5, 2013) – Emerson Process Management’s Smart Wireless technology is enabling Enomondo S.r.l. to improve visibility into the process at its biomass power plant in Faenza, Italy.

Enomondo – a partnership between Caviro Distillerie and Herambiente – is using wireless measurement devices to monitor a complex fuel pre-treatment operation, an incineration process, and a new boiler at the plant. Wireless technology enabled additional measurement devices to be installed quickly and easily, helping to optimize control of the process and contributing to an estimated 5% increase in overall operational efficiency. The availability of diagnostic data also improved predictive maintenance procedures.

The 13.7 MW power generation plant is located at the Caviro Distillerie wine and denatured alcohol plant. It uses 140,000 metric tons per year of by-products from the alcohol production process to produce power for 29,000 neighboring households. This use of alternative fuels helps to reduce Italy’s power generation CO2 emissions by 35,500 tons a year.

To increase the efficiency and capacity of the plant, Enomondo installed a new boiler, which created the need for new instrumentation for monitoring temperature and pressure. In addition, the existing fuel pre-treatment process, which ensures nitrogen oxide emissions are less than half the levels set by Italy’s Integrated Environmental Authorization, involves numerous variables that are not easily controlled and would benefit from additional measurement points.

To meet these needs Enomondo chose Emerson’s Smart Wireless technology, which offered simpler installation and lower overall costs than traditional wired solutions. Twenty-two Smart Wireless transmitters, including Rosemount® 3051S pressure and 648 temperature transmitters, transmit measurement data via a wireless gateway into the existing Emerson DeltaV™ digital automation system, giving operators greater visibility into the process so that they can make adjustments to increase efficiency.

As a result, Enomondo has been able to increase operational efficiency and improve output. Installation, maintenance and operating costs have also been reduced. Installation was very easy and required no external engineering capability. Because the wireless instruments required no cabling or cable ducts, infrastructure costs were around 30% lower than a wired alternative. Layout and wiring costs were halved, and installation and instrumentation control costs reduced by 40%.

Using the existing DeltaV system and AMS Suite predictive maintenance software to receive, store and analyze device data, Enomondo has been able to use the wireless system to meet its predictive maintenance requirements. The additional continuous data made available by the wireless network enables personnel to identify performance degradation trends that signify potential problems, then use this information for better maintenance scheduling that helps optimize operator efficiency.

“The modularity of Emerson’s Smart Wireless technology, the ease and reduced cost of implementation compared to wired devices, and its reliability once installed have encouraged us to expand its use into other applications,” said Alessandro Catani, Enomondo Plant and Energy Manager. “For example, temperatures in some of the air-conditioning systems at the plant were prone to overheating. By installing Rosemount wireless temperature transmitters on a temporary basis, it was possible to obtain the data we needed to identify potential problems and correct them.”

Twenty-six Rosemount inventory tank gauges with Smart Wireless THUM Adapters have also been installed at the Caviro Distillerie production facility to continuously monitor levels and increase safety by preventing overspills within the alcohol storage tank farm.

Press Release: Emerson wins $33 million contract to upgrade automation on Statoil platform in Norwegian North Sea

Posted on 1st March 2013

New safety and automation systems using Emerson’s new electronic marshalling with CHARMs technology will help improve oil recovery from Visund platform

AUSTIN, TEXAS (February 27, 2013) – Statoil has awarded Emerson Process Management, a business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR), a $33 million contract to upgrade safety and automation systems on the Visund oil platform in the Norwegian North Sea.

Previously selected by Statoil as one of its preferred automation and safety suppliers, Emerson will provide integrated safety and automation systems to help the international energy company boost oil recovery and extend the life of the field while also reducing operating costs and minimizing safety and environmental risks. The Visund project includes a complex but seamless changeover from existing to new automation and safety systems (known as a hot cutover) to allow uninterrupted operation of the floating production, drilling, and living-quarters platform.

Emerson will design, configure, and install the new safety and automation systems, as well as provide ongoing support services to help ensure continued smooth operations. Aker Solutions of Bergen, Norway, will provide project-execution support to Emerson.

To help with space and weight limitations on the platform and to offer more design flexibility during the upgrade, Statoil will take advantage of Emerson’s electronic marshalling with CHARMs technology. This technology reduces the complexity of connecting such systems to the hundreds or thousands of measurement and control instruments in typical process operations – a significant advantage because last-minute wiring changes with traditional marshalling can result in high costs and expensive delays.

Statoil will also benefit from Emerson’s operator and maintenance interfaces that were designed with human-centered design principles to make it easier for workers to correctly and efficiently assess operational conditions and take appropriate action to ensure production uptime.

Based on Emerson’s PlantWeb™ digital architecture, the integrated solution will include a DeltaV™ digital automation system to monitor and control platform operations, as well as a DeltaV SIS system to perform emergency shutdown functions and to control fire and gas detection systems. Emerson’s AMS Suite predictive maintenance software will be used for instrument commissioning and configuration and to monitor field devices for potential problems that could affect operations.

“Emerson continues to develop its safety and automation business in the North Sea by providing the best technologies and by investing in support services and skilled personnel to help our customers make the most of their operations,” said Steve Sonnenberg, president of Emerson Process Management. “We are delighted that Statoil has recognized the value our technologies and experience can bring to the Visund project.”

The Visund oil and gas field, which came onstream in 1999, is located 22 kilometers northeast of the Gullfaks field in the Tampen area of the Norwegian North Sea.

Press Release: Emerson launches major expansion of project services

Posted on 9th October 2012

Project awards drive engineering capacity increases

ANAHEIM, CALIF (October 8, 2012) — Emerson Process Management has accelerated plans to expand its project engineering staff to meet the demands of major project activity. With its number of new projects growing at double-digit rates, the added engineering capacity is needed to meet customers’ needs for effective, timely project execution.

“We’ve seen unprecedented project growth, especially in very large projects, over the last three years,” said Jim Nyquist, president of Emerson Process Management’s PlantWeb Solutions Group. “It’s very gratifying that customers are overwhelmingly choosing us, and it’s also the catalyst to grow our engineering resources to stay ahead of the project load.”

This expansion follows significant growth in the past as well. Emerson has added over 2500 engineers to its project execution staff since 2005. In 2012 staffing levels for project activity topped 4600. The company is now adding engineering staff at double-digit growth rates and expects to do so for at least the next five years. Emerson continues to grow in all disciplines including process control, safety instrumented systems, electrical and instrumentation, networking, and wireless as well as deep industry expertise and operations management. Based on the specific project needs, various disciplines come into play to achieve the user’s automation goals.

“We’re not just adding staff, we’re making them more efficient and effective,” continued Nyquist. “We’ve invested for years in standard practices and tools for project engineering and are taking advantage of global communications technology to be able to locate talent globally and then deploy our expertise anywhere it is needed. Our commitment is to meet our customers’ demands for competitive, predictable, high-quality engineering services that get them into production and making money as quickly as possible.”

Major project activity in both developed and emerging markets periodically requires focusing considerable engineering resources on one geographic area for a sustained period. Emerson’s engineering depth – including multiple wholly owned “back office” engineering centers – enables it to collaborate globally and refocus parts of its overall global engineering staff for these occasions. At the same time, standardized project execution through its Project Management Office (PMO) initiative enables consistent results anywhere in the world. Combining PMO standards and best practices with tightly coupled front-office/back-office virtual teams has reduced project execution costs dramatically on recent Main Automation Contractor projects – resulting in substantial savings for the end user.

Emerson project service customers reflect the diversity in the automation market, and range from BP’s oil production platforms in the North Sea, to Lucite International’s global polymer plant in Singapore, to Petrobras’ refining facility in Brazil. They all use Emerson’s automation expertise to meet their ever-increasing business demands.

Evidence of the excellence embodied by the project execution teams is found in highly positive customer survey results, additional mega-project awards to Emerson, and customers entrusting Emerson to manage multi-project programs over a number of years. Customer survey results in the past year indicate both high satisfaction with project management as well as an overall three-point gain in the customer loyalty score. The number of mega-projects (greater than $5 million) won has tripled in less than two years. Multiple customers who started working with Emerson on a single project have evolved to where Emerson is currently managing multiple project programs. Emerson managed one multi-project program starting in 2001 and is currently managing thirteen.

Emerson’s growth in project services means a continued expansion in engineering staff, supported by consistent processes and ongoing refinement of engineering tools to improve efficiency.

Press Release: Emerson launches global support service initiative

Posted on 9th October 2012

Support staff and facilities are expanding to help customers meet the challenges of today’s process operations – wherever they are

ANAHEIM, CALIF (October 8, 2012) — Emerson Process Management has embarked on a program to strengthen its support service capabilities for customers around the world. In 2012 Emerson extended its current footprint of 374 global service locations by opening eight full-service facilities staffed by trained, certified personnel. In the next few years the company expects to increase the number of service facilities by nine per year, while expanding its support staff at a pace roughly double the underlying automation market growth rate.

“Our service expansion plans are driven by two challenges our customers face today,” said Emerson Process Management’s Terry Buzbee, president, final control. “Developed countries are losing experienced personnel due to demographic shifts, and process facilities are being commissioned in emerging markets where enough skilled workers are hard to find. As a result, process manufacturers are turning to us more and more for services to keep their assets performing at peak efficiency. Our commitment is to meet these needs with local service center facilities and skilled service teams.”

As the worldwide drive for resources and goods grows beyond traditional markets, Emerson is expanding to provide prompt local service to process operations wherever they are. To date this has included commissioning service facilities in Brazil, Qatar, India, Spain, Italy, China, and Turkey. Within a year the company plans to open nine additional service centers – two in Asia, two in the Middle East and Africa, one in Latin America, and three in Europe. Emerson is also adding new capabilities and support services to meet customer needs that a few years ago didn’t exist or were met by in-house resources.

With the shrinking of plant maintenance budgets and the availability of technology to predict automation asset performance, Emerson has developed a family of reliability services including asset prioritization, on-site or remote asset management, and turnaround planning and management.

More customers are running to failure and also running with less maintenance staff and spares inventory. Emerson is fulfilling that gap with Certified Repair and Quick Ship product manufacturing and service centers. These service centers provide machining, manufacturing, fabrication, actuation, instrumentation and quality assurance, and are designed to operate at faster than factory lead-times to the following KPI Responsiveness Standards:

  • Service center location less than two hour proximity to customer plant
  • 24 hour replacement parts delivery
  • 24/7 repair availability (on-site and depot) to customer timeline requests
  • New product delivery in five days (10 days for systems)

“Our capability to quickly ship new and repaired products to customers when they need them is critical to getting their plants up and running,” said Buzbee. “We want to be the partner our customers know they can trust to not only get them back on-line, but also keep them running reliably.”

By further augmenting customers’ existing operating staff with Emerson service specialists to help plan the adoption of new technology and maintenance best practices, plant uptime can be improved more quickly and reliably. Customers can also take advantage of Emerson’s extensive online training capabilities to re-skill workers without travel costs or time away from their facility.

”Our mission is to build out all of these local service and execution capabilities in every major industrial cluster within each world area,” said Buzbee.
