Press Release: Emerson chosen to digitally automate Bulgarian pulp mill expansion
PlantWeb® digital architecture to help triple capacity and reduce environmental impact
AUSTIN, TEXAS (June 11, 2008) – Emerson Process Management has been awarded a contract to digitally automate an expanded recovery boiler and fiberline at Svilosa pulp mill, which is located on the banks of the Danube, near the town of Svishtov in northern Bulgaria. Emerson will install its PlantWeb® digital plant architecture for the project that will triple mill output, reduce the plant's environmental impact and improve energy efficiency.
Producing bleached hardwood kraft pulp (BHKP) for a large geographical area, the mill is expanding to realize growth from a global increase in demand and reduce energy costs and the plant's environmental impact. Production will be increased from 50,000 tons/annum to 150,000 tons/annum, and energy consumption will be reduced along with the production of greenhouse gasses. In addition, the project will enable the plant to reduce water usage and water-borne emissions.
Emerson will supply engineering services and project management of the automation that will apply the company's Smart Mill technology. The digital technology is based on Emerson's PlantWeb digital architecture that is proven to improve mill project performance and deliver sustained operations improvement.
The digital PlantWeb technology will network a DeltaV™ digital automation system with intelligent field instrumentation including Fisher® valves and FIELDVUE® digital valve controllers, Micro Motion® Coriolis mass flow meters and Rosemount® pressure, flow, temperature and level measurement instruments. The AMS® Suite of predictive maintenance software will process information from the network for use by Svilosa operations and maintenance personnel to improve mill availability and performance.
PlantWeb architecture is an open, standards-based digital automation solution that networks intelligent field devices, digital systems, and software to control processes and manage equipment and other assets. It delivers information for facilities management, including predictive alerts of pending malfunctions and guidance for corrective action to avoid production interruptions and shut downs.
