Press Release: Emerson Participates in Demonstration of Foundation™ for Safety Instrumented Functions
Global demonstration project supports the implementation of Foundation fieldbus protocol for SIS applications
AUSTIN, TEXAS (May 20, 2008) -- A pioneer in the development and use of Foundation™ fieldbus, Emerson Process Management continues its commitment to supporting open, interoperable standards with its participation in the development of the draft FF-SIS specification.
As part of this effort, Emerson joined a demonstration project to show the benefits of Foundation for Safety Instrumented Functions (SIF) at multiple end user sites around the world. Demonstrations of SIF technology will be conducted at Shell Global Solutions, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; Saudi Aramco, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia; BP, Gelsenkirchen, Germany; and Chevron, Houston, Texas, USA. The field demonstrations are intended to promote adoption of Foundation SIF technology in the process industries. The project also includes development of SIF best practices and guidelines, as well as training and interoperability test tools for automation equipment manufacturers and end users.
Emerson supplied equipment from its Foundation SIF demonstration versions of the Rosemount® 3051S, DeltaV™ SIS, Fisher® FIELDVUE® DVC6000f SIS, and AMS® Suite: Intelligent Device Manager. Devices from other suppliers also helped demonstrate interoperability of devices using the draft FF-SIS protocol specification. The demonstration showed the use of Foundation fieldbus to implement safety functions that include pressure devices, level devices, and valves with partial stroking capability.
“It is fitting that we use Foundation fieldbus to deliver additional ease of use and reliability for safety in process facilities,” commented John Berra, president of Emerson Process Management. “Emerson has thoroughly proven the value of Foundation fieldbus in process control applications, and we are pleased to be part of extending it to safety instrumented functions.”
“Extending the reach of our smart SIS solutions with Foundation fieldbus digital communications promises to make installation easier and brings the immense value of predictive intelligence to safety,” continued Berra.
First in the industry to employ digital intelligence and diagnostics from sensor to logic solver to final control element, Emerson's smart SIS safety management solution is an extension of its PlantWeb® digital plant architecture, providing an integrated approach to complete safety loops. The Emerson SIS solution enables customers to implement safer facilities, improve availability, lower life-cycle costs, and ease regulatory compliance. The smart SIS system components include Rosemount and Micro Motion certified and proven-in-use devices, the DeltaV™ SIS system, SIL-PAC final control solution with FIELDVUE® SIS controller, and the AMS® Suite: Intelligent Device Manager.
