Total Communication
“As an engineer, I like to know how stuff works. I don’t trust “black box” solutions where I’m expected to just trust how something works. I know that our intelligent field devices use EDDL in their communications, but just what the heck is that stuff? Seems pretty “black boxish” to me.”
While there may be no compelling need for end users to learn all of the ins and outs of EDDL, many folks would like to have a better understanding of what it is and why it is important than they do today. Christian Diedrich, Ludwig Winkel along with Emerson’s Jonas Berge and Terry Blevins have demystified EDDL in their recent InTech magazine article “Total Communication – EDDL allows interoperability for devices to constantly gather information (343KB PDF).” This piece provides end users a good understanding of what EDDL is, how it facilitates device interoperability, and how to get the latest updates for your devices. This is an excellent piece for folks to quickly get an overview aware of what s going on with their intelligent field device communications.

Right Message, Right Person, Right Time
“Just knowing that any one of my instruments become unreliable at any time, gives me the willies. I know it isn’t too likely, but the consequences can be just awful. Emerson instruments have alerts that can warn me of pending trouble, but we have a mix of other suppliers’ devices in this plant and always will. I wish there was an easier way to find out if my instruments are reliable.”
If you’ve ever thought this to yourself, perhaps help may be on the way. Emerson is releasing the technology behind PlantWeb Alerts as an open standard so other instrument suppliers can easily incorporate this important diagnostic information into their devices. John Rezabek, contributing editor at Control magazine, discusses this new development in his monthly column, “Right Message, Right Person, Right Time (140KB PDF).” He suggests that the ability to distill just the right information, out of the host of possible diagnostics, will soon let automation professionals breathe easier.

Applications of Self-tuning Control
“Sure I can tune a loop. Who can’t? They’ve even got software that can do it with a single click on a button. Trouble is, we use this facility to make lots of different stuff, so my system’s loop tuning changes day-to-day. Now how am I supposed to keep up with that?”
If you work in a changing environment, there may just be a way to keep your facility properly tuned despite constantly changing working conditions. Today self-tuning controllers have achieved some success in dealing with these types of problems. Editor Vance VanDoren produced an overview of the several opportunities in this area in his piece, “Applications of Self-tuning Control (1.23MB PDF),” in the September 2007 issue of Control Engineering magazine. This article describes how many automation practitioners have successfully used new products like DeltaV Insight software to get a handle on tough and changing process conditions.

Emerson Strategies for Abnormal Situation Avoidance & Alarm Management
“Sure, I know that there are too many alarms going off in my control room. The operators complain about it every time they see me. But do you think am I going to be the guy that suppresses the alarm that might avoid real trouble? Not me brother. What I need is a better way to know just what is going on with the department alarms so I can address this is a methodical safe way.”
It is surprising how many well-intentioned alarm designs wind up actually causing operational problems. Larry O’Brien an analyst at the ARC Advisory Group has published his analysis of Emerson’s strategies for dealing with both these issues. This objective third-party report, “Emerson Strategies for Abnormal Situation Avoidance & Alarm Management (513KB PDF).” may point you to a systematic method of improving your operational alarms and getting those grumbling operators focused on something else for a change. It may also prove useful in helping you justify the effort to your management.

The Ups and Downs of Taking the Bus, Part 2
“O-kay. The orders for the fermentation skids are all placed and stuff is arriving on the docks. Now all I have to do is get it configured, validated, and started up. This new Foundation fieldbus and ProfibusDP stuff should make that easier. Won’t it? Somebody please say, ‘Yes.’”
If you are facing a validated equipment startup, Gary Forrest’s experience at his bioprocess facility at Wyeth’s Pearl River facility may point the way to heading off potential problems. In part two of his article, “The Ups and Downs of Taking the Bus (405KB PDF),” published in Pharmaceutical Manufacturing magazine Gary discusses getting his equipment up, validated, and running. Good news, he says things went well and instrument functionality and reliability are outstanding.
