Virtual Control of Real pH
“Of course my plant has pH control problems. Doesn’t everyone’s? We use three pH probes for each measurement application but I never believe any of them. Just about the only way to manage this situation is to plan to stay well on one side or the other of the control point and eat the cost of the extra reagents.”
If you’ve resigned yourself to the inevitability of loosing the wrestling match with pH control, perhaps Emerson’s Greg McMillan can come to your aid. His article, “Virtual Control of Real pH,” (173KB PDF) published in the November issue of Control magazine suggests that a virtual model of the plant’s operation can eliminate most of the tricky aspects of pH control and provide more reliable and less costly operation than relying only on sensors. Perhaps a virtual plant simulation could get you ahead of the “titration” curve once and for all.

Faking It Isn't All Bad
“There just never seems enough time to get everything done. Process engineers and biochemists like me always seem to be under-the-gun to get results out and quickly move processes from pilot to full scale manufacturing. Isn’t there something that can make our lives easier?”
Walt Boyes and Nancy Bartels of Control magazine hear these entreaties all the time. In the October issue of Control they offer up process simulation as a way to speed up process evaluation and/or keep track of a complicated process where direct process measurements may be difficult or complex.
"Faking It Isn't All Bad" (198KB PDF) features two major advances by Emerson’s advanced control group. Terry Blevins is working with a host of folks in the bioscience area to develop and publish information on the modeling of mammalian cell culture. This modeling technique promises to dramatically reduce the time and cost to determine optimum cell culture conditions. It also promises to cut time to full scale operation of these complicated batch bioprocesses. Terry and team are also working with Lubrizol to develop a process history of complicated batch processes that will permit extraction of a few key indicators that can predict the “health” of an ongoing batch to permit timely operator intervention. This technique will lead to better quality produced despite the impact of a host of process parameters. If you could benefit from state-of-the-art simulation techniques, this piece could point you to solutions that may save you time and headaches.

Job Title: Principal Engineer (Austin, TX)
Minimum Education Qualifications: BS Eng/CS + 4 – 5 yrs; OR MS Eng/CS + 3 – 4 yrs related experience required.
Brief Description of Duties/Minimum Requirements: This position is located in Austin, Texas. Travel (12-18 trips/yr.) to customer sites or training assignment is likely.
The successful candidate's responsibilities will include:
- Working directly with customers or Emerson Technical Support and development engineers on technical solutions to DeltaV Power and Grounding issues
- Providing input to Technology on the requirements for DeltaV System installation guides and other documentation
- Being responsible for training other support engineers in the areas of DeltaV power and grounding issues
Important Experience:
- Must be able work directly with end user resolving installation
- Must have 8 years experience in either design, maintenance, or troubleshooting power and grounding systems for instrumentation
- Must have knowledge of appropriate meters and tools (Scopes, Megger, meters)
- Knowledge of Foundation Fieldbus installation is desired
- Knowledge of environmental monitoring in regard to instrumentation is desired
- Knowledge of network installation, grounding, troubleshooting is desired
Previous Experience/Skills: Minimum 5 years experience in industrial power and grounding for instrumentation. Experience may be any combination of design, installation, or troubleshooting. Must be current with applicable standards and codes.
