From the Top: What's In It for Us?
“I’ve enough to worry about on my automation project. At least tell me that I won’t get any surprises from project execution.” A person’s credibility is at stake when a project cost and schedule are communicated upward to company management. So, smooth project execution is key to the personal success of the project team members. Melissa Herkt discusses Emerson Process Management’s process for insuring smooth project management in her article, From the Top, What’s In It for Us, in the March issue of PM Network magazine.
“Good project management is an insurance policy. It prevents project disasters. For me, project management is about predicting the future in time to do something about it. … Without these concepts, we wouldn’t be able to deliver what our customers demand; predictable project cost, schedule and quality.” Her article also discusses the business practice change-management process she used to get Emerson Process Management to adopt best practices from all parts of its far-flung enterprise to form a single, worldwide process for her project management organization by using what she calls “radio station WIFM – what’s in it for me.” (315KB PDF)

Press Release: Emerson receives Frost & Sullivan Customer Value Enhancement award for pharmaceutical industry automation solutions
PALO ALTO, CALIF. (March 27, 2007) — Frost & Sullivan selected Emerson Process Management, an Emerson (NYSE:EMR) business, as the recipient of the 2006 Frost & Sullivan Award for Customer Value Enhancement within automation and software solutions for the pharmaceutical industry.
"As the leading supplier of automation solutions in the vaccine, biologics, and active pharmaceutical ingredient businesses of the life sciences industry, Emerson has a superior ability to translate business requirements into products that positively impact its pharmaceutical customers' bottom lines," says Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Sanjeev R Sridharan.
"While most pharmaceutical companies are focused on solutions that could solve their problems at a departmental level, Emerson helps them achieve incremental operational advantage by eliminating islands of automation to ensure seamless flow of real-time information across the entire enterprise," Sridharan added. "Further, Emerson uses this operations knowledge to ensure capital projects deliver highest performance throughout a facility's life cycle."
With its PlantWeb® digital automation architecture, Emerson has successfully differentiated itself from other companies by translating its vision of an integrated solution into reality thus becoming a one-stop shop for all pharmaceutical industry customers.
PlantWeb empowers customers with predictive intelligence, eliminates hassles associated with paper-based records, and helps personnel view real-time records and comply with FDA regulations and initiatives such as Process Analytical Technology (PAT). In addition, it helps pharmaceutical customers eliminate errors or deviations across multiple batches.
"We are pleased that this award represents customer value delivered by our automation solutions for the Life Sciences industry," said John Berra, president of Emerson Process Management. "We are honored to join with our customers for the production and delivery of pharmaceuticals that are safe and effective in providing relief, comfort and improved quality of life around the world."
Each year Frost & Sullivan presents the Customer Value Enhancement Award to a company that has demonstrated the ability to expand the customer base, while maintaining its existing install base, with more innovative value creation and enhancement strategies than competing vendors. The Award recognizes the company's successful sales entry, customer acquisition and service strategies, and the degree to which those strategies have met customers' stated needs and requirements.

Avoiding the Pains of Systems Integration
“I’ve heard about integrating MES systems with batch processes, but what I’ve heard hasn’t been very good. What should I look out for and what benefits should I expect if I decide to go down this road?”
Michalle Adkins and Dawn Marruchella answer these questions in a column called, “Ask the Experts – Avoiding the Pains of Systems Integration,” (63KB PDF) published in AIChE’s magazine Chemical Engineering Progress. They suggest working with a proven automation partner and not duplicating functionality already in the DCS batch executive, as two ways to stay out of the weeds. Improved documentation management and storage are suggested as benefits along with reduction in data entry and possible reduction in operator errors.

Press Release: Emerson introduces DeltaV InSight next-generation control performance application
DeltaV InSight enables users to optimize loop tuning across the entire control system
AUSTIN, TEXAS (March 5, 2007) — Emerson Process Management has announced the availability of the DeltaV™ InSight integrated control performance software as part of DeltaV version 9.3 release. DeltaV InSight is an integrated application used to monitor, analyze, diagnose, and improve control loop performance.
The Insight application includes all the basic monitoring and tuning capability of its predecessor products, DeltaV Tune and DeltaV Inspect, plus advanced diagnostics and adaptive tuning capabilities made possible with embedded learning algorithms.
Process manufacturers each year lose capacity and quality due to process variability and poor performance of their control loops. Users are often unable to properly maintain each of the hundreds of control loops and instruments in their facilities. DeltaV InSight makes it easy to improve process control by monitoring control performance; identifying and diagnosing problem loops; recommending tuning and maintenance improvements; and continuously adapting to changing process conditions.
DeltaV InSight automatically learns users' processes with embedded learning algorithms running at the controller level and develops process models based on day-to-day operations. These models allow users to identify operational benchmarks, diagnose problems and calculate optimum loop tuning across the entire control system. The InSight application highlights poorly performing loops automatically, permitting users' attention to be focused just where needed.
A single user interface provides seamless transition between loop diagnostics and tuning. DeltaV InSight is an embedded application and requires no separate installation, integration or configuration. The InSight application automatically recognizes all of the input, output and control blocks in the system and automatically recognizes new blocks as they are added.
DeltaV InSight is part of Emerson's broad range of embedded advanced control software applications that power the PlantWeb® digital plant architecture to improve plant efficiency by 2% and more through delivering asset optimization, process automation, and management execution. Further cost savings, increased plant availability, and enhanced safety and environmental compliance are achieved with the PlantWeb architecture.
