The DCS Spirit Lives On Everywhere

I currently have a 1990 vintage DCS from a well known supplier that works OK, but I wonder what I could do if I upgraded to a new system. Sure there would be hassles and some risk in the transition, but unless I get some new gear, I’m pretty much stuck here with little chance of getting any better operating results. Where can I go to get some perspective on this?

If this is how you feel, then the December issue of Control magazine may provide a starting point for striking out in a new direction. Execs from several different automation company as well as end users talk about their experiences with migrations to state-of-the-art systems in the article, “The DCS spirit lives on everywhere”. Press Release: Emerson voted best provider of process management technologies and services by industry professionals

Company leads CONTROL Magazine Readers' Choice Awards for 14th consecutive year

AUSTIN, TEXAS (February 20, 2007) — Emerson Process Management, an Emerson business (NYSE: EMR), has been voted the best supplier of process management technologies in CONTROL Magazine's 2007 Readers' Choice Awards. It marks the 14th consecutive year that the company has captured the user-voted recognition.

Emerson's intelligent measurement, final control and analytical field devices, and its control/automation systems — all key components of its industry-leading PlantWeb® digital plant architecture — have consistently won the most categories. Emerson's professional services also led the user voting in this year's Readers Choice Awards.

Emerson was named the best for delivering quality products and customer service by industry professionals — in engineering, plant operations, research and development and other technical areas — who were asked to enter the name of the best provider in each category. Entries were unaided rather than selecting from a list of suppliers.

"We are delighted to be acknowledged by such substantial numbers of process industry professionals, a clear affirmation of our approach to addressing customer needs," said John Berra, president of Emerson Process Management. "Our focus is not only providing excellence in technology and products, but also being recognized for our approach to service. This recognition spurs us to make additional investments to deliver what our customers want."

Emerson products and software received 31 first place awards, nearly four times the nearest competitor. Emerson's professional services received top rankings in seven customer service performance categories, more than twice the nearest competitor.

Readers' Choice respondents repeatedly recognized Emerson intelligent technologies and services that power the company's PlantWeb architecture — a digital automation solution that networks intelligent field devices and sensors throughout plants to monitor asset and process performance, delivering predictive information for use by maintenance and operations to reduce shutdowns and improve overall plant operating efficiency.

Adding to its Reader's Choice recognition, Emerson also ranked No. 1 among the Top 50 Automation Companies in the industry announced by CONTROL editors in December, a distinction the company has held since 1995.

"We take a proactive approach with customers to meet their changing needs in products and services," Berra added. "Our customers are our rudder. We try to anticipate future requirements, introduce new products and continuously improve our service capabilities."

Emerson's first place wins include: DeltaV™ digital automation system, Emerson software in ten categories including AMS™ Suite; Fisher® control valves and valve actuators; Brooks® positive displacement and variable area flowmeters; Daniel® turbine flowmeters; Micro Motion® Coriolis mass flowmeters and density/concentration analyzers; Rosemount® pressure and temperature transmitters, magnetic and vortex flowmeters, contacting level gauges, non-contacting radar and inventory grade level gauges, and RTDs; Rosemount Analytical pH/ORP/conductivity, process gas chromatograph, and stack/emissions analyzers.

Interstate Paper LLC

What should you do if your paper mill is mostly pneumatic controls and product variability is an issue and machine paper breaks frequent? Feel the Pulse of Automation

"Sure, I’ve heard about Foundation fieldbus, but I don’t have time to do the research needed to convince my boss that this is the right way to go. I need a single article that gets at the major benefits of Foundation fieldbus that I can lay on my boss’s desk that will help him see it my way."

That must have been the mental image that editor Robert Spiegel had when he wrote the article, “Feel the pulse of Automation,” for the November 2006 issue of Automation World. For that article he polled numerous automation vendors and end users and reported their thoughts and real-world experiences on why Foundation fieldbus is the right approach to use in today’s automation settings.
