User-Friendly Advanced Control
Automation vendors talk about their own products in glowing terms. But, who believes them? Give me some independent views please. Dan Hebert, senior editor at Control magazine, qualifies as an independent voice, so it was particularly helpful to have him call the new DeltaV InSight product, “User-Friendly Advanced Control,” in his column for Control’s October 2006 issue. He talks about the advantages of embedded applications and the usefulness of automatic configuration of the tuning analysis tool. He offers the quote, “Automatic configuration virtually eliminates the maintenance headaches associates with separate advanced control software applications.” So DeltaV Insight must be good stuff, yes? Fieldbus in Biopharma
You’ve no doubt heard it before, “Instrumentation buss technology has advantages, but it isn’t ready for the pharmaceutical industry yet.” Who wants to be the first to test out possible benefits if it means delays in commissioning or startup of my facility? I’d rather let someone else suffer with those problems.
Well, William Dolan of Genzyme committed to using fieldbus technology for his Mozyme drug manufacturing facility and reports much success. His manufacturing process involved mammalian cell culture, purification, clean-in-place, and steam-in-place and has some Class 1 Div 1 processing areas as well – a pretty tough application. He wrote about his experiences with field buss technology in a two part article published in Control magazine, “Fieldbus in Biopharma.” Genzyme’s benefits were listed as, expanded view for operators, reduced instrument and wiring cost, reduced cabinet size, reduced man hours for commissioning, and reduced total cost of ownership. Draw your own conclusions but one report says buss technology is ready for the pharmaceutical industry.
