Heading for the Future
If you owned a refinery that was overstaffed, went off-line frequently, couldn’t make up-to-standard products, and in addition wasn’t profitable what would you do?
The answer is - invest in new extensive automation upgrades, of course.
Romania’s Rompetrol Rafinare refinery has been investing in refinery-wide updated automation technology since January 2001. Now it experiences reliable operations, by 2004 achieved profitable operations (first time in 30 years), and has improved operator efficiency dramatically. Operations are also safer since the introduction of the DeltaV SIS system on their gas fired heaters. The details of this very dramatic turnaround are to be found in the March 2006 issue of Hydrocarbon Engineering "Heading for the Future". An exclusive interview with Nicolcioiu Alexandru, Chairman, and other executives of Romania's Rompetrol Rafinare refinery and chemical complex. (392KB PDF)

Press Release: Emerson launches global language versions of online PlantWeb University educational program
Free user-friendly courses make it easy to learn and apply the latest process automation technologies and strategies
AUSTIN, TEXAS (April 19, 2006) – Emerson Process Management has launched two global language versions of their highly acclaimed PlantWeb® University online educational program (www.PlantWebUniversity.com). Free training courses are now available in Chinese and Spanish language. Both language versions offer a user-friendly interface and access to 46 courses and five white papers on the most current automation technology and business topics.
"Providing courses in multiple languages is part of our ongoing effort to make PlantWeb University a truly global learning center," says Jane Lansing, vice president, Emerson Process Management. "Our goal is to provide manufacturing professionals worldwide with relevant educational information on the latest technology developments. We will include more content at the Chinese and Spanish sites this summer, and will be adding more languages in the future."
The first Chinese language version of PlantWeb University went online in January 2004, and has attracted thousands of industry professionals. The 2006 version offers an improved user interface for easier participation and a more effective learning experience.
Courses are free, easy to understand and available to anyone. Each course takes about 15 minutes to complete, and participants can learn at their own pace from anywhere there is an Internet connection.
"Since its inception in 2002, PlantWeb University has provided practical, real-world information to over 30,000 industry users worldwide," says Lansing. "As new technologies continue to emerge at a rapid rate, mystery and misinformation abound. Adding global languages can only strengthen and enhance a program already known for offering objective and useful tools for learning how to improve process and business performance."
PlantWeb University offers two "schools" of instruction. The Business School focuses on improving plant profitability. It teaches users how to improve plant efficiency for higher output and lower costs, how to reduce costs and increase availability by streamlining maintenance strategies, and how to improve profitability using the structured metric of Overall Equipment Effectiveness.
The Engineering School explores leading automation technologies such as fieldbus and HART, how they deliver benefits, and practical pointers for putting them to work in the user's plant. Course titles include Project Engineering Standards, Field Level Networks, Fieldbus Communications, Choosing a Host System, Interoperability, Reliability and Redundancy, Networking Options, and Intrinsic Safety.
PlantWeb University is the first Internet website to offer in-depth training on fieldbus and to provide a sound education on the utilization of automation technologies to improve plant profitability. Emerson also offers in-depth training through its Educational Services group (www.emersonprocess.com/education). Educational Services courses are available online, at regional training centers, and in locally delivered classes around the globe.

Abnormal situation prevention through smart field devices
In process automation parlance, abnormal situations are defined as “non-routine incidents that the normal plant control system does not handle.” Often when these occur, interesting times follow with possible loss of product & profit, or even hazardous situations. It would be nice if these things could be headed off, wouldn’t it?
Today, smart field devices with high data sampling rates along with a bit of diagnostics software has been shown to predict pending abnormal situations in time to allow process personnel head them off. The March 2006 issue of Hydrocarbon Processing magazine includes an article, “Abnormal situation prevention through smart field devices” written by Evan Eryurek, Peter Sharpe and Douglas White. It provides both theory and practical case histories showing how this new technology can work for you. (690KB PDF)

Press Release: Emerson voted best supplier of process management technologies
Emerson products and services dominate CONTROL Magazine Readers' Choice Awards for 13th year
AUSTIN, TEXAS (April 6, 2006) - Emerson Process Management, an Emerson business (NYSE: EMR), has been voted the best supplier of process management technologies in CONTROL magazine's 14th Annual Readers' Choice Awards.
Emerson products and services have dominated the awards for 13 years by consistently winning the most categories, including the coveted "best process control/automation system" award for five consecutive years.
CONTROL readers repeatedly named intelligent products and software from Emerson, with the company receiving 29 first-place awards, more than three times the number of the nearest competitor. The products and software power Emerson's industry-leading PlantWeb® digital plant architecture, a digital automation approach that integrates plant-wide operations for optimum process control, operational excellence, and management information.
In a year that saw a significant reduction in the number of companies named for "good-to-excellent" service and support, Emerson divisions and related companies were lauded for delivering the best in quality customer service in 18 categories, three times more than the nearest competitor.
"Being named by process control professionals in such overwhelming numbers in an unaided survey is a gratifying affirmation of our open, standards-based technologies, and our commitment to customer service," said John Berra, president of Emerson Process Management. "Our goal is to give our users an edge through combined technology and services, and the annual Reader's Choice results are an important scorecard of progress. This encourages us to make even more investments to help our users achieve better business results."
Emerson's first place wins include the following: DeltaV™ digital automation system and seven related software categories; Asset Optimization software; Fisher® control valves, float/displacer level gauges, and electric and pneumatic valve actuators; Brooks® positive displacement and variable area flowmeters; Daniel® turbine flowmeters; Micro Motion® Coriolis mass flowmeters and density/concentration analyzers; Rosemount® contacting radar level gauges, non-contact radar gauges, pressure and temperature transmitters, magnetic and vortex flowmeters, and RTDs; Rosemount Analytical ph/ORP/conductivity and stack/emissions analyzers; and Saab Rosemount inventory grade level gauges.

Press Release: "Learn, Lead, Unleash" theme sets the promise of 2006 Emerson Global Users Conference
User presentations and workshops to focus on experience with Emerson enabling technologies and services
AUSTIN, TEXAS (April 4, 2006) - Mark your calendars. The user-led board of the Emerson Global Users Exchange has announced that plans are under way for the assembly's 2006 conference to be held October 2nd - 6th at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center in Nashville, Tennessee. The board has set the theme of Learn, Lead, Unleash to convey the promise that this year's conference will deliver through its continuing focus on educational and leadership sessions for all levels of process manufacturing professionals. User presentations and workshops will update colleagues on experience with technology selection and application, investment justification and automation strategy.
"The conference continues to grow in value and attendance every year," said Scott Pendegrass, Control Systems Engineer for ExxonMobil and 2005 Chairman of the Emerson Global Users Exchange. "2005 was our largest and most successful to date, drawing a record attendance of 1,814 process manufacturing professionals from 46 countries. The extensive program included three keynote speakers, two management round tables, nine industry business forums, 253 workshops, 47 short courses, and over 40,000 square feet of technology exhibits."
Feedback was overwhelmingly positive and congratulatory with participants describing the Emerson Exchange conference as "a very well spent week, full of opportunities to learn" and a "tremendous amount of information in one location … better for my personal use than a major trade show." One participant's comments reflect the goal of the Emerson Users Exchange — to provide "a good opportunity to see new products, learn how others approach projects and obstacles, and network."
"Again this coming October, users will discuss comprehensive automation strategies to take advantage of today's technologies and ensure the future viability of their plants," says Jim Cook, Degussa Corporation and incoming Emerson Exchange Chairman for 2006. "Attendees will hear from industry leaders how Emerson's PlantWeb digital plant technologies are providing breakthrough results for process manufacturers worldwide. They will share best practices, technical innovations, application successes and quantified results, and received valuable insight into new technology developments and directions."
In addition to the annual conference, the Emerson Global Users Exchange coordinates and produces activities such as special interest group meetings, newsletters, and communications related to Emerson products and solutions. Members of the Emerson Exchange actively participate in product development and application discussions with Emerson's engineering and management staff, providing feedback at conferences and other meetings. Users Exchange participant comments, conference agendas, registration and other details are available at www.EmersonExchange.org. Early registration is encouraged.
