Press Release: Emerson chosen to digitally automate Mexico's first liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification terminal
Project capabilities, local support and PlantWeb® digital automation approach lead to selection of Emerson as Main Automation Contractor
AUSTIN, TEXAS (March 30, 2006) - Emerson Process Management announced that it has been chosen as Main Automation Contractor (MAC) for the Altamira LNG Regasification Terminal, currently under construction near the city of Tampico on the Gulf of Mexico. Emerson will provide essential automation systems and services for the first import terminal which will receive liquid natural gas (LNG) shipments in Mexico, and convert them back to natural gas to be distributed by CFE, Comisión Federal de Electricidad, and PEMEX, Mexico's state-owned, nationalized petroleum company. An additional four terminals are planned for the near future in Mexico; a MAC provider will be selected for these projects.
Overall engineering and construction is provided by ICA Fluor and IHI, who are building the Altamira Terminal for a consortium of Terminal de LNG de Altamila (TLA) — which is jointly owned by Shell Gas B.V. (Shell) and Total Group of France — and Mitsui & Co. Ltd. The regasification terminal will process up to 3.75 million tons of LNG per year (MTPA) base load when in full commercial operation in October, 2006.
The Altamira terminal is part of an expanding LNG industry that is critical to the future global energy supplies. Since liquefied natural gas is about one six-hundredth the volume of gaseous natural gas, LNG has major transport advantages, making viable the processing of previously unreachable deposits. The U.S. is an example of LNG import growth, expecting about a 16% annual increase through 20251.
As the Main Automation Contractor, Emerson is responsible for development, installation, configuration, testing, and commissioning of all elements of the system to control the process from the point of receipt through regasification and into transmission pipelines.
PlantWeb digital automation technologies at the Altamira Regas Terminal include the DeltaV™ automation system, AMS™ Suite: Intelligent Device Manager, and Rosemount® smart temperature and pressure transmitters. In addition, Emerson will integrate metering skids, vibration equipment monitoring, fire and gas, safety, and emergency shutdown systems.
"Emerson best met all the requirements for Main Automation Contractor on this project," commented Juan Jose Aguilar, control systems engineer of ICA Fluor. "In addition to having expertise in hydrocarbons processing, the company offered an advanced technological solution for controlling the regasification process. Emerson also complied fully with the Shell Design Engineering Practices as required by the Shell/Total/Mitsui consortium, and was able to bring full engineering and service support to the construction site."
Emerson will provide on-site support and service for the Altamira LNG terminal, according to Ernst Vanstrien, terminal area engineer from TLA responsible for MAC selection. The project is being managed and implemented by Emerson Mexico, which has engineering and project management skills, complemented by strong local engineering and service support.
"The worldwide importance of liquefied natural gas as an energy source is on a healthy and sustainable growth path, and we are extremely pleased to perform as Main Automation Contractor for the Altamira regasification project," said Leo Rodriguez, President of Emerson Process Management Latin America. "The project provides another opportunity to draw from our LNG experience that — in addition to regasification at Altamira — includes digital automation improvement to upstream liquefaction and transportation processes."

Training solution improves operator skills and enables significant customer savings
AUSTIN, TEXAS (March 27, 2006) - Continuing its commitment to improving customer operational excellence, Emerson Process Management today launched the DeltaV™ Operator Training Solution (OTS).
DeltaV OTS is a complete simulator-based learning environment designed to prevent operator error which can result in accidents, product loss, or costly plant shutdowns. The need to prevent operator error was recently confirmed by a study of chemical manufacturers which indicated that 37% of plant incidents could be categorized by incorrect operator actions.
The new DeltaV OTS training solution will also will teach operators the necessary skills to get the most value from process automation technology. Studies have shown that improving an operator's skill level can have significant financial impact resulting from less downtime, less out-of-spec product, better use of fuel and resources, and less supervision.
DeltaV OTS is a comprehensive learning program leveraging Emerson's expertise in control systems and process automation. Developed by Emerson's Educational Services experts, the OTS is unique from other training programs in its emphasis on the total learning experience including professional lessons plans, course materials, delivery, student testing and customization to match the customers' actual plant operations. By bringing together all skillfully crafted elements of the program, Emerson has leveraged its expertise in teaching methodology to ensure a productive learning experience.
DeltaV OTS is built on Emerson's DeltaV Simulate suite of products which enables training simulators to use the identical operator interface and control configuration found in the company's actual control room. Creating an environment identical to the control room enables operators to learn and gain experience in a safe, controlled environment without risk to plant personnel or operations.
DeltaV OTS is scalable solution that can be sized to meet a customer's specific needs. Press Release: Emerson expands PlantWeb installation with digital automation project for Alexandria Carbon Black Company in Egypt
PlantWeb architecture with FOUNDATION fieldbus communications technology reduces installation time and improves product consistency.
AUSTIN, TEXAS (March 14, 2006) — Emerson Process Management has recently completed the installation and startup of PlantWeb® digital plant architecture with FOUNDATION fieldbus technology on a fourth production line at the Alexandria Carbon Black Company (ACBC). The company, Egypt's only manufacturer of carbon black, installed the new line to meet increased demand for its carbon black products which are used in the manufacture of tires, rubber products, plastics, inks, dyes and paints.
The Alexandria Carbon Black Company is the fastest growing carbon black producer in the world with over 90 percent of production being exported to companies that include Goodyear, Michelin, Bridgestone, Pirelli, Dunlop and Continental Tire.
The new installation follows the similarly successful automation at the third production line at the plant. PlantWeb has enabled reduced engineering and installation costs, improved product consistency, and lower maintenance costs.
PlantWeb Services from Emerson included engineering, installation, project management and startup. The PlantWeb solution includes five DeltaV™ digital automation system workstations that use FOUNDATION fieldbus digital communications protocol to communicate with intelligent field devices from Emerson, including Rosemount® 3051 Smart pressure transmitters and Model 848T temperature products, Micro Motion® Coriolis flow meters and Fisher® valves with Fisher FIELDVUE® digital valve controllers.
Emerson's AMS™ Suite: Intelligent Device Manager software is used to enable configuration and calibration of field devices, and to access the predictive intelligence of the digital devices. Continuous online diagnostics in the field devices provide status of process and instrument health, enabling operations and maintenance personnel to recognize changes in status levels and take action to prevent issues before they occur.
The use of FOUNDATION fieldbus simplified installation and commissioning, enabling Emerson to complete the project very quickly. For example, the systems and marshalling cabinets were designed ordered, wired and tested in just seven weeks.
Following on from the success of the PlantWeb and DeltaV-based installations on production lines 3 and 4, ACBC is already working on a fifth production line to meet the ever increasing demand for its products.

Devil's in the Details
All you need is some deionized water, compressed dry instrument air, and a 500 gallon charge-heat-mix-dump reactor for your pilot plant. So, you contact three skid builders and order their off-the-shelf skids and you’re good to go. Who needs an engineering staff or an engineering and procurement contractor (EPC) to put this project together?
Then, when the stuff arrives, you realize that the operator interfaces are only useable by engineers, the electrical standards are unsuitable to your facility, and the piping designs between skids are incompatible. What a mess. Unfortunately this scenario is all too common. Control Design magazine in their January 2006 article recounts similar experiences, and discusses how to deal with the “Devil’s in the Details.” (1,125 KB PDF)
