Using Model Predictive Control-Based PAT to Optimize Distillation

Advanced control and Pharmaceutical production don’t normally go together. Do they?

Is it even possible to implement something like Model Predictive Control on a validated process? The folks at Baxter Healthcare’s Guayama facility have shown that this is indeed possible. They used MPC along with SPC to improve solvent recovery from their product and have achieved significant improvements in operations as a result. The one page article discussing their results "Using Model Predictive Control-Based PAT to Optimize Distillation” was published in the January 2006 issue of Pharmaceutical Manufacturing magazine.

This is just another example of how DeltaV embedded advanced control can help pharmaceutical manufacturers meet the FDA PAT initiative to improve ongoing operations. (130KB PDF)
