Press Release: Emerson's new SIS courses expand free online training at PlantWeb University
Eleven user-friendly courses focus on fundamentals for planning and implementing safety instrumented systems
AUSTIN, TEXAS (January 31, 2006) — As part of an ongoing effort to provide manufacturing professionals with relevant educational information on the latest technology developments, Emerson Process Management now offers courses on safety instrumented systems (SIS) at their PlantWeb® University online learning center (www.PlantWebUniversity.com). The new user-friendly courses provide fundamentals and practical tips for SIS planning, selection and implementation. The courses include concise information on basic SIS concepts, design and installation, operation and maintenance, safety standard compliance, and new "smart" SIS technologies.
"Choosing and implementing a safety instrumented system is an important but often intimidating task for users," says Jane Lansing, vice president of marketing for Emerson Process Management. "The SIS courses are designed to help users understand what goes into creating a reliable, affordable, standards-compliant safety instrumented system, so they have a head start on making the right decisions."
For example, as the process industries move to an integrated-loop approach to safety management — spanning the entire loop from sensor to logic-solver to final control element — the PlantWeb University courses can help students evaluate smart SIS technology as a way to attain the right level of safety at the lowest cost throughout the life of the plant.
As with all course offerings at Emerson's PlantWeb University, the 11 new SIS courses are free, easy to understand, and available to anyone. Each takes about 15 minutes, and participants can learn at their own pace from anywhere there is an Internet connection. Content is devoid of marketing hype and gives practical insights into the application of new technologies.
"Since its inception in 2002, PlantWeb University has provided practical, real-world information to over 20,000 industry users around the world," says Lansing. "We're gratified that so many people have found the courses to be an objective and useful tool for learning how to improve process and business performance."
Emerson also offers in-depth training on safety instrumented systems and other process-management topics through its Educational Services group (www.EmersonProcess.com/Education). Educational Services courses are available online, at regional training centers, and in locally delivered classes around the globe.

Press Release: Emerson SIS Engineers are First to be Certified by TÜV to IEC 61511
Certification applies to worldwide engineering of the Emerson unique smart SIS with DeltaV™ safety instrumented system logic solvers, sensors and valves
After rounds of audits in all world areas, the TÜV organisation has certified that all of the engineering work done by safety instrumented systems engineers from Emerson Process Management consistently meets the requirements of the IEC 61511 global standard for functional safety in the process industries. The certificates were presented to Phill Turner, SIS Project Operations Manager of Emerson by Josef Neuman of TÜV on 25th September 2005.
Certification applies to all worldwide engineering of the Emerson unique smart SIS that extends the innovations of PlantWeb® digital architecture to enable customers to implement safer process plants and facilities. DeltaV safety instrumented systems use information from the intelligent field devices within the PlantWeb architecture. Comprising sixteen-channel modular logic solvers, the DeltaV SIS system can be deployed in distributed fashion to perform programmable electronic system functions for virtually any process safety need.
The DeltaV logic solvers are the heart of the smart SIS total-loop safety approach. Only Emerson offers this approach that is implemented using the world’s broadest range of products certified in compliance with international standard IEC61508 for safety functionality. In addition to the DeltaV SIS systems, the smart SIS solutions from Emerson integrate Fisher® digital valve controllers, Rosemount® temperature and pressure transmitters, and Micro Motion® Coriolis flow meters.
The Emerson European engineering group was the first in the world to meet the IEC 61511 standard, followed by their colleagues in the Americas and Asia Pacific. Emerson professional safety personnel and services organisations help customers plan and implement smart SIS solutions to comply with the new IEC 61511 safety standards. Expert services include assisting the customer with process hazard analysis and risk assessment, along with smart SIS design, implementation, and commissioning.
“We determined at the outset of our SIS programme that we would have one standard, worldwide, for our engineering groups working on safety instrumentation systems,” said Phill Turner. “Today all of our SIS engineering personnel follow the same TÜV certified processes. No matter where in the world a project is, it will be implemented to the new IEC 61511 safety standard.”
DeltaV SIS is the heart of the Emerson smart SIS architecture, built with PlantWeb technologies. It offers automated safety loop testing and other capabilities that minimise personnel exposure to hazardous areas and increase system availability while reducing life-cycle costs and easing regulatory compliance. This smart SIS approach (www.EmersonProcess.com/SIS) uses the same engineering tools and operator interfaces as the Emerson DeltaV digital automation system, enabling the viewing of safety system information from any operator screen.

Performance at Pernis: A New Loading Facility Gives Shell Throughput and Energy Efficiency Gains
OK, perhaps loading refinery products into trucks isn’t a very exciting business. That may be true unless perhaps you plan to load about 10,000 trucks a year at one facility and have stringent environmental requirements for emissions. Then it gets pretty interesting. Shell contracts with Royal Vopak to manage this loading for their refinery at Pernis in the Netherlands. Vopak in turn uses Emerson’s SmartProcess Terminal Management Solution to run the loading facility. Results to date include reduction of required operational hours from 24 to 16, headcount reduced from ten to six, operational costs have been reduced 20%, and electrical energy consumption has been reduced to zero by burning vapors returned from the trucks to both generate electricity and eliminate emissions. Details of this were documented in PROCESS Worldwide in the November issue article "Performance at Pernis". (203KB PDF)

Powering Your Bottom Line
It is almost unnecessary to say that energy costs are high and it is important to carefully control energy use in order to control overall manufacturing costs. You have to say almost since not everyone is controlling energy costs as well as they might. Karen Balentine and Jim Payne of Emerson comment on ways for Food and Beverage producers to evaluate, measure, and better control energy costs in the Food Engineering November 2005 article, “Powering Your Bottom Line.” It is pointed out that while energy costs aren’t the largest cost for food producers, it is often the largest controllable cost. This piece has input from industry analysts, automation vendors, and energy consultants on practical ways to get energy costs under control. (751 KB PDF)

Katrina's Wake Up Call
As Hurricane Katrina bore down on 30% of America’s refining capacity many engineers were prompted to revisit their backup and safety plans for these assets. One factor in these plans is the evaluation and adoption of the new IEC 61511 standard for safety processes that applies throughout those asset’s lifetime. The new DeltaV SIS product, as part of the Emerson’s safety instrumented system, is one part of the solution needed to meet this new standard. Stephanie Neil covers this and other plans put in place to deal with Katrina in the November cover story of Manufacturing Automation "Katrina's Wake Up Call".
