Press Release: Emerson to Automate Major Expansion Project

Emerson to manage project and implement PlantWeb® solution to streamline validation, speed start-up, and increase production at facility producing medical imaging liquids

Emerson Process Management has once again been chosen by GE Healthcare as a working partner in a major new project to increase the production capacity at its Lindesnes plant in Norway. Faster time to market, easier validation, and operations excellence based on real-time diagnostics in smart field devices led to the selection of Emerson.

Emerson is developing the solution and managing the project. The company is installing its PlantWeb digital plant architecture with the DeltaV™ digital automation system and FOUNDATION fieldbus™ digital communications technology for the major project. Value to Emerson is estimated at £2M.

“We have chosen to continue with fieldbus technology based on our positive experiences following its implementation in one of our new factories,” said Roy Tråne, the GE Healthcare engineer responsible for the project at the Lindesnes plant. “The bus technology provides a cost effective solution with faster and more efficient start-up. We can also see significant longer-term benefits from the diagnostics available from the intelligent field devices.”

Emerson’s scope of supply includes project management, configuration and start-up. The PlantWeb digital approach will include Rosemount® measurement instruments, Micro Motion® Coriolis flowmeters, Rosemount Analytical instruments, and Fisher® valves with FIELDVUE® digital valve controllers. The company’s AMS™ Suite: Intelligent Device Manager will monitor diagnostics delivered by field devices, and provide alerts and guidance for maintenance effectiveness.

Also included in the package are tailor-made solutions for removing 5000 I/O from the existing PLC systems and integrating these into the new scheme. The complete system will be a combination of the new and existing systems and will have a capacity of around 7500 I/O. Work commenced during the summer of 2004 with a planned completion date of February 2007.

Roy Tråne continued, “Emerson has previously demonstrated the necessary know-how, will and understanding to supply a well-documented and validated project, tailor-made for the pharmaceutical industry. This was an important factor for us in our choice of system supplier for the extension of the existing factory from the two bidders”.

GE Healthcare’s Lindesnes plant is situated in the municipality of Lindesnes, 70km south of Kristiansand. It has around 400 employees and produces the active ingredients used in contrast agents. The project includes new installations and alterations to the existing production plant, designed to meet the increased market demand for its X-ray and MRI contrast agents. The work is being carried out in stages, and the entire factory is being built in accordance with national and international standards related to the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry.

Emerson's Zone 1 & 2 Remote I/O reduces project installation cost

Emerson’s DeltaV Remote I/O is now available for applications in Zone 1 and Zone 2 applications or Class 1, Division 2 applications. The Zone 2 scanner addresses up to eight discrete or analog I/O cards which can be targeted to one of four controllers for additional flexibility. The Zone 1 scanner works with up to four new intrinsically safe I/O cards that have both inputs and outputs on each card.

A DeltaV system can have up to 60 remote I/O scanners and any controller can have up to 16 modules associated with it. Analog I/O cards are all equipped with full HART pass through capability. Foundation fieldbus cards are slated for later release. Communications between remote I/O and controllers is via standard redundant Ethernet communications.

"The goal for our new remote I/O scanners is to drive down our customers’ total life cycle costs ensuring easy installation and maintenance," said Gary Law, DeltaV product manager. "Our I/O modules are 'plug and play' requiring no dip switch settings or user configuration effort. And unlike other remote I/O solutions, the I/O can connect with different controllers on the control network." Zone 1 I/O modules can also be used in Zone 2 applications where customers want intrinsically safe field circuits.

The new I/O modules are designed so that separate I/O cards can be replaced in the field without shutting down the module. The Zone 1 I/O is equipped with two certified energy limiting fiber optic communications ports. The Zone 1 I/O also uses a patented approach to intrinsic safety that involves a combination of safety technologies for additional security. Time stamping and control strategies are maintained in the controllers. The Zone 2 I/O scanners are marine certified making them ideal choices for offshore oil and gas production platforms and FPSOs.

Emerson's Single-Port Fiber Optic Switch Conducts Ethernet in Zone 1 Areas

Fiber optic cables are the safe way to route Ethernet through Zone 1 or Class 1 Division 2 plant areas. Right? Well, that is only true if the cables are housed in a conduit or protective sheath. This adds significantly to installation costs. A broken fiber optic cable carries enough energy to cause a spark and is unsafe unless protected, until now. We are releasing a new product that is certified to limit the energy in a fiber optic cable so they can be run without additional protection in flammable plant areas.

Emerson has released for sale a new energy-limiting fiber optic switch that for the first time permits fiber optic cable to be used in Zone 1 areas without protective sheathing. The Single Port Fiber Optic Switch is certified by KEMA to limit the energy in the cable so that a potential cable break is safe in Zone 1 and Class 1 Division 2 (C1D2) environments. The new Ethernet switch is DIN rail mounted, uses 24 VDC power, is equipped with a single fiber optic port, and four 10/100 MB TX Ethernet connections. The port can is used with the new DeltaV™ Zone1 I/O scanner and can be used independently of the DeltaV system to route Ethernet safely through Zone 1 or C1D2 areas.

"This product was developed to reduce the cost of installing fiber optic cabling in our customers' Zone 1 areas," said Gary Law, DeltaV system product manager. “This is the first of a family of similar fiber optic products that will address Zone 1 and C1D2 issues.” The fiber optic switch is designed it to the same G3 environmental specs as the DeltaV product so it can be mounted in Zone 2 or C1D2 environments. Since it doesn’t use the DeltaV backplane, pairs of these switches can be used wherever fiber optic cable needs to be routed to or through Zone 1 or C1D2 locations.

Press Release: Emerson Partners with Huntsman to Enable Asset Optimization Program

AUSTIN, TEXAS (August 31, 2005) – Emerson Process Management has announced the initiation of an asset optimization improvement program at the Huntsman Holland plant at Rozenburg near Rotterdam. Based on a consultative audit performed by Emerson, Huntsman is implementing a combination of planned and predictive maintenance using Emerson’s AMS™ Suite: Intelligent Device Manager software, communicating with a PlantWeb® digital network of intelligent field devices. Huntsman expects to use the predictive technology of PlantWeb to schedule maintenance requirements and reduce plant failures.

Huntsman operates in an expanding market and its management team is always looking for ways to increase production capacity and improve efficiency. Huntsman is already using Emerson process and control products, and Emerson was asked to conduct the asset optimization benchmark assessment and site evaluation. The objective was to review the condition monitoring programs at the site and develop an improvement program. Following the three-day assessment, the improvement plan was presented to senior management at Huntsman and approved for implementation.

"We see Emerson as much more than a product supplier," said Laurence Thring, European integrity engineer at Huntsman. "By using Emerson, we know we are getting expert advice that will provide an independent input to our future plans. Emerson’s knowledgeable consultants have worked with organizations similar to our own, and this enables us to see how we are rated against other companies."

Craig Llewellyn, president of Emerson’s Asset Optimization Division concluded, "As the team at Huntsman works through our recommendations, we expect to see significant increases in productivity together with reduction in maintenance expenses and spares inventory."

About Huntsman
